Architecture & history
DomAquarée’s architecture in the business center of Berlin blends seamlessly with the historic structures of the local district, thereby integrating the site into its surroundings. Its access pathways, alleys and public squares open up the whole ensemble to the outside world.
Architecture
A building ensemble as a piece of architectural art
Each of the buildings comprising the four-part ensemble has its own distinctive character thanks to the different façade design, which features Spanish sandstone. The Heiligegeistgasse passage with its glass roof connects the busy Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse with the Hackescher Markt area to the south – a favourite tourist destination. The proximity to water defines the architectural design by Sergei Tchoban. The cafés, restaurants and shops along the river Spree look out onto the waterfront.
History
An eventful past – an exciting future
The former Palasthotel had just been demolished and DomAquarée was still at the development stage when the first cafés started to open up, still surrounded by building sites. The vision of regenerating the area as a prestigious business and leisure location in the heart of Berlin was established early on. The largest new cultural building project in Europe, the recreation of Berlin Palace, offers exciting prospects: restoring the Brandenburg Gate – Unter den Linden axis will transform central Berlin.
DomAquarée ten years on
An eventful and exciting time
Alongside art and music, in recent years the CityQuartier has made headlines above all for its illuminations during the Berlin Festival of Light. Its tenth anniversary in 2014 was celebrated with a huge cake competition. All tenants and residents received a thank you gift.
DomAquarée ten years on – Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, insisted on passing on his congratulations in person. Together with other guests, he sampled the artistic creations produced by trainee pastry chefs from well-known Berlin hotels as part of a celebratory competition.

Artistic concept
The open air gallery: Art in the neighbourhood
The open-air gallery at DomAquarée is a special highlight. Sculptures, installations and photography created by artists of international renown exclusively for this location offer an interesting take on contemporary art. The pieces serve as fun orientation aids through the site and give the CityQuartier a unique identity.
“Torwächter” by Stephan Balkenhol
Sculptor Stephan Balkenhol created three larger-than-life figures on wooden pillars in the Heiligegeistgasse entrance which act as “gatekeepers”.
“Changing Invisibility” fountains by Jeppe Hein
At the crossroads of the ensemble’s passages, Dane Jeppe Hein echoes the water motif of DomAquarée with his “Changing Invisibility” fountains.
“Pic-Nic Poker” by Massimo Vitali
The Italian photographer’s large-format photo of Paris’s Jardin du Luxembourg on the glass walls of the external elevator evokes DomAquarée as a place to see and be seen.
“Drei Mädchen und ein Knabe” by Wilfried Fitzenreiter
The sculpture once decorated the fountain in front of the former Palasthotel. In 2007, the four figures, three girls and a boy, were reinstated close to their original location and now look out over the Spree like mermaids at rest.
